Burh

A Burh is a defended settlement dating to the Anglo-Saxon period. Many Burhs were planned and there are rural as well as urban sites. The defences could take the forms of natural features such as slopes or marshes or could be man made such as banks and ditches. Burhs were built in response to the threat of Danish invasion in the 10th and 11th centuries.

Aylesbury and Buckingham were late saxon burhs but there are also possible burhs just outside Buckingham at Bourton and Sashes Island in Hedsor.
